In May 2008, the local fire department conducted an emergency drill at Brenntag’s site in Deerlijk.

A total of 150 firefighters took part in the drill with the approval of on-site security. The simulated accident involved several trucks loaded with liquid and solid hazardous materials. At least five people were trapped in vehicles and had to be freed by the fire department. The purpose of the exercise was to practice correct procedures for dealing with hazardous materials, including potentially poisonous gases, under realistic conditions. The main issues for the emergency crews were: What must be done first in this type of situation? What protective measures are available for the fire department? What equipment is needed? All these questions were addressed in detail in the follow-up discussion. And it was clear to everyone that emergency drills consistently provide valuable new insights. Kurt Blomme, Health and Safety Officer at Brenntag NV Belgium, says: "After all, not all emergency situations can be addressed in advance in the theory. Practical exercises are absolutely necessary."
