Fire Department Drill: Extreme Scenarios For Increased Safety

GERMANY With 64 firefighters and 16 vehicles, the large-scale firefighting operation on Dieselstrasse in Heilbronn could have come straight from a film set. Emergency service ASB even hired a make-up team to make the “injured” people – played by Brenntag employees – look as realistic as possible. However, no accident ever took place – this was just the extreme scenario for an elaborate fire department drill held at the Heilbronn location in September. The scene: while a tank vehicle is being filled, over 50 liters of sodium hypochlorite leak out, burning three employees. The liquid comes into contact with hydrochloric acid, causing lethal chlorine gas to escape. The truck driver gets such a fright that he falls through the lanyard rail onto the concrete road below. When an approaching forklift truck brakes suddenly, this causes an IBC container to come loose, falling on top of an employee. Both ASB and the fire department were very pleased with the outcome of the exercise. A follow-up has been planned – after all, systematic exercises such as this help to establish a routine that could be decisive should the need arise.
