Situated directly on the Mediterranean Sea, the port of Valencia is one of the most important Spanish hubs for international goods flow, and is often described as the gateway to North Africa. Brenntag upgraded almost its entire distribution center there and constructed a new 320-m³ underground tank farm for flammables. The tanks are divided into 4 compartments each, allowing greater flexibility in storage. The new above-ground tank farm for acids and lyes features a capacity of 510 m³. Tanks are filled either by pump or in a more environmentally friendly manner using gravity (the tank platform is installed at a height of 5 m). A solids warehouse has been built to store products for the food industry. The state-of-the-art facility also boasts two chemical reactors to create custom solvent formulations. These blends are produced with the aid of bubbling nitrogen, which is considered a particularly safe process. Frédéric Pierre, Managing Director of Brenntag Iberia, says: “The main reasons we undertook this project were to achieve a high level of safety and to promote economic growth in a region characterized by a high concentration of medium-size companies, which are traditionally Brenntag’s target market.” Steve Holland, Chief Executive of Brenntag Europe, had the following to say at the grand opening of the facility: “By expanding its Massalfassar site, Brenntag Iberia not only strengthens its regional market position; it also becomes more competitive in supplying its customers.” With a total area of some 19,000 m², Massalfassar complies with all legal standards of quality (ISO 9001:2000) and environmental protection (ISO 14001). 40 Brenntag employees work at the new facility, which has an annual production capacity of 53,000 tons.
